2011 Interview

Why do you like the game of softball?
I love the game.   Fast paced. It is liked baseball but more entertainment.   The friendships and teammates I have.

Who is the best softball player you have ever seen play?
Andy Purcell

Where do you call home?
Andover, MN

What do you do for a living?
National Sales Manager for Combat Sports

Did you play sports in High School / College / Pro?
Football, Hockey, and Baseball in High School.

How did you get your start in softball and how did you get to the upper level?
I have been around softball my whole life, My Dad and Mom both played.   My Dad is in the Minnesota USSSA Hall of Fame.   I started out playing “C” with my High School Baseball coach and played 4 years with his team.   My first break was with an “A” team from Minnesota, thanks to Geno Burdick.   In 2001 Dan Smith asked me to go to the NSA Super World Series with them when I was playing on a “AA” team.  After that they asked me to play with them full time in 2002.

What batting grip do you use?
I use an overlap grip

What is your favorite sports team?
Minnesota Twins, University of Minnesota Hockey, and the Minnesota Vikings.

What is your favorite sport other than softball?
Hockey and Golf are tied

Do you have any superstitions and if so, what are they?
I have to where Eyeblack

What is your most memorable softball moment?
Winning the 2001 USSSA “AA” World Series.  Our Coach that year passed away just before that tournament and he was a great mentor to me.    I dedicated that tournament to him at his funeral service and we won.    I was the Most Valuable Player and Home Run Champ.   I only made 2 outs in that tournament.

Is slowpitch softball a sport or a game?
It is definitely a sport.   You have to work hard at it to be the best.

What is the best improvement upper level softball could make?
Getting more teams to play at the highest level and spread out the talent.

What is your favorite non-World tournament?
The Dudley Classic in MN.
